POTTERY WORKSHOP: SHAPE A CHAWAN USING THE KURINUKI TECHNIQUE [February 28]

$85.00
1 PERSON

INTRODUCTION TO KURINUKI POTTERY
Our new creative formula offered

at our school Charyū - 6872 St-Hubert Street !

During this three-hour workshop guided by our master ceramist Marianne Chauveau, participants will learn to craft a chawan (matcha bowl) using the Japanese kurinuki technique. After the workshop, the pieces will be dried, glazed, and fired. Each person will have a choice of 4 glazes to decorate their piece. It can be picked up approximately 4 weeks later.

Kurinuki, from the Japanese "to hollow out," is a traditional shaping technique that involves carving a block of clay to bring out the desired object. Rather than producing perfect forms, kurinuki allows for a gestural and intuitive approach that highlights the texture of the earth. The resulting pieces are inspired by nature, vibrant, and poetic.

Workshop structure:

  • Introduction to kurinuki and the concept of wabi-sabi

  • The chawan: function, tradition, technical elements to consider (size, shapes, texture, thickness, etc.)

  • Demonstration and presentation of examples

  • Shaping the chawans

  • Finishing and glaze selection

  • Cleaning

This workshop is suitable for beginners; no pottery experience is necessary to participate. Given the unpredictability of the medium, final results and pieces cannot be guaranteed.

Recommendations for participants: short nails, bring an apron or clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
